Asst. Prof. Dr. Wasfi Kahwachi has participated in the 7th International Conference of the Union of Arab Statisticians that was hold in Cairo 7-8th of March 2023 with The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (Egypt), under the auspices of Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly, and in the presence of Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Majid Othman, President of the Union of Arab Statisticians, and Khairat Barakat, President of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics. As well as the presence of several representatives of ministries and agencies, in addition to a group of academics and researchers interested in the science of statistics from various Arab countries.

This year’s conference was under the slogan “Activating Statistical Studies in the Arab World to Achieve the Strategic Development Goals“, to reflect the importance of exchanging experiences between the members of the Union, to support the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and to strengthen aspects of cooperation and common links between Arab statistical agencies to support their progress in providing preliminary indicators to governments and planners. In decision-making and policy-making, as well as working to assist countries in applying best practices, as well as showing the role of statistics in supporting and sustaining economic development and giving a clear picture to decision-makers that enable them to activate the country’s development programs and plans.

The importance of this conference is growing because it deals with important topics for all statistical agencies in the Arab countries, which contribute to linking the Arab statistical agencies with a common database for exchanging data and experiences in various statistical fields.

The conference discussed four themes covered by the various seminars, studies and research presented during the conference sessions over the course of the two days. These are the role of statistics in achieving the goals of sustainable development 2030, the role of statistics in securing the future requirements of society, statistics, technology and the digital society, and the role of statistics in a changing world.

The conference discussions included a session on the experiences of some Arab countries (Sudan, Morocco, Jordan and Egypt) in conducting the economic census, in addition to modern jobs and their relationship to statistics, (I was a keynote speaker in this session), as well as addressing gender statistics and evidence-based policies to empower women, in addition to the main dialogue session aimed at discussing the activation Statistical studies in the Arab world to achieve the strategic development goals.

The major part was that Dr. Kahwachi was a keynote speaker talking about the new jobs for statistics graduates that attracted a great attention.

Then he presented a paper in the conference under the title (Using Neural Network to Forecast the Electricity Generation in Kurdistan Region – IRAQ).

In the afternoon session he headed a session of the conference paper discussions.

During the sessions Dr. Kahwachi talked about our university and the ranking that it has achieved besides the ISO certificates, besides he announced about the 9th ICOWOBAS 2023, many of researchers asked details, in which he shared the links in the group of the Union of Arab Statisticians, they promised that they will participate in submitting papers.
